HOME

HOME. by definition home  is a “permanent structure” where people dwell.

i couldn’t wait to get my hands on our new humble abode in brooklyn, new york 9 months ago to creatively design our space challenged home with touches of familiarity. i love our home – – not only for the design details but for the lessons this humble space has taught me.

ironically – shortly after moving to new york, matt’s travel schedule sped up and he found himself splitting his time between los angeles and myrtle beach for his current show, welcome to myrtle manor. our new york experience – although chock full of challenges – has been the best thing for this  “bi-coastal family” and has allowed us to redefine the word home.

before moving to new york i was disillusioned to think that a strong woman could handle life on her own while “seeming” to have it all under control. our short time of brooklyn dwelling has completely shattered my prideful thinking and i have realized that in order to live a fuller more enriching life i have to accept that i cannot “do life” on my own. our friends {both in brooklyn and elsewhere} have offered us a community full of laughter, encouragement, support and have opened my eyes to the meaning of family – – giving insight to how we are called to live intentionally with each other.

the time that matt has been away has not been in vain. i am thankful that the distance has offered a different perspective of both of our contributions to our family, reminding us that our family does not work without the other.

although i love entering the doors of our humble abode – – this place is not my home – – rather matt, sophie + hazel are all the home i will ever need!

HOME

“Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road

And although this wave is stringing us along
Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home”

all i want for christmas …

all i want

as my daughters {sophie 5 + hazel 3} and i were making christmas garland this morning,  the song “all i want for christmas is you” began to play on pandora holiday radio.

i have heard this song more times than i can count but today as i listened to this song, i heard it through the voice of the parents that lost their little ones this past friday. i was inundated with tears as i looked at my healthy and happy little ladies and realized in the moment that christmas is more than checklists and to-do’s. the holidays can become a lot less meaningful without the ones you love by your side. today i mourn with the parents and surviving children who have had their christmas magic taken away from them in such a tragic way. as you listen to the words of this popular song please join me in lifting up the innocent and hoping that these family’s are able to find joy once again.

. . .

“i don’t want a lot for christmas, there is just one thing i need. i don’t care about the presents underneath the christmas tree. i just want you for my own more than you could ever know – all i want for christmas is you. i don’t need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace. santa claus won’t make me happy with a toy on christmas day. i just want you for my own more than you could ever know – all i want for christmas is you baby … ’cause i just want you here tonight holding on to me so tight. what more can i do? baby all i want for christmas is you!!” – mariah carey

fairy dust and make believe

sophie lost her very first tooth today at school. i have to admit, the tooth was so wiggly this morning that i tried to keep her home {just} until it fell out but to no avail … i missed it. just one more example staring me in the face that my little girl is growing up.

this is the first of many milestones in my daughter’s life and i wanted to make sure that this day would be a vivid memory for her – one that she would look back on with a sparkle in her eyes remembering that for a moment make-believe was tangible and real.

sophie was practically born in our {once} store abode – a home furnishings store in downtown knoxville – and because of it, she loves all things involving money, receipts, etc. … at least i would like to think that abode had something to do with her early love for business. i discovered legendary letters on etsy and knew that i had found the perfect way to convince sophie that indeed the tooth fairy was real  – – not that she needed a lot of convincing. we received (3) small manilla envelopes, (3) thank you envelopes to place the money inside and (3) personalized receipts.

i decided to take it a step further … just because … and created a personalized tooth fairy that was all her own. i stumbled upon the fairy name generator, a magical website that creates a fairy based on the first and last name of a child. sophie’s fairy is feather rainbowwand … she is absolutely lovely!

i am enamoured by make-believe and how small sparks of mystery can ignite so much creativity within one’s spirit and hope that my girls never become “too old” to revel in make-believe.
